Rovers allay fears
DONCASTER Rovers' next home game against Watford on Saturday week will go ahead despite a looming FA Cup tie.
There were fears among some fans that the club's postponed third-round tie against Brentford, due to be played a week tonight at Griffin Park, would take preference over the Championship game against the Hornets were it to be called off again.
But Rovers chief executive Dave Morris, told The Star that in the event of next week's game being called off again the two clubs would try again the following Tuesday (January 19).
"If we can't get the game played on either of the two dates then it will be played on the day of the fourth round on the 23rd," he said.
The Rovers official said that the club were hoping to get the Brentford game played next week. But admitted, with the wintry weather predicted to last into next week by some forecasters, that the tie could again be doubtful.
The Bees, who had played a League One derby against Charlton on Monday, came in for some criticism after Saturday's game was called off following a late-morning pitch inspection.
But Morris said he felt that the club had done all it could to get the game on.
He said that the club would be speaking to the Keepmoat Stadium groundstaff ahead of the Watford game if the cold weather did continue into next week and threaten the game.
Supporters of both clubs expressed their disappointment when the Bank Holiday Monday game against Leicester City was called off due to a frozen pitch.
Said Morris: "We'll be asking them if they know of any extra precautions that they can take to make sure there are no more games called off. The last thing we want is a fixture backlog."
Rovers had been expecting their biggest gate of the season for the Foxes' visit and lost thousands of pounds as a result of the postponement.
"We won't know roughly how much we did lose on the day until we've played the game and we compare the crowd on the night," said Morris. "Obviously no club can afford to lose money in the current financial climate.
The game, which will see the return of former fans' favourite Richie Wellens, has been provisionally re-arranged for a fortnight today.
