Rovers stay in Kilkeny frame

LEEDS United's Neil Kilkeny remains a target for Doncaster Rovers even though the Elland Road side have rejected their initial approach.

"He's a player that we've been interested in for 18 months," said Rovers No 2 Richard O'Kelly yesterday.

"I first saw him as a 16 year-old playing for Birmingham City against Aston Villa in a reserve match and he ran the show - he was absolutely magnificent.

"He had a lot of confidence and he's a player that we've kept tabs on ever since.

"We were interested in him when he left Birmingham, but he chose Leeds.

"He didn't play a lot of games when Simon Grayson took over as manager, but he broke into the side in the closing weeks of the season and did really well, and we are aware of that.

"But he's a player that we've always been interested in and who we will continue to be interested in.

"We made a discreet enquiry and were told that he is still part of their plans so we left it at that. but everybody has got a price."

Rovers, who admit that they would also be interested in Kilkenny's free-scoring team-mate Jermaine Beckford if the price was right, could make a more formal approach to Leeds were either skipper Brian Stock or Richie Wellens to leave.

"If we were to lose somebody then we would need to replace them and that is what we'd try to do, but they would have to be the right player.

"We've got a certain way of playing, and a certain philosophy and the more players you have with that in-bred philosophy, the better because it stands you in good stead when things aren't going well.

"We've drawn up a list of players that we've monitored and who we feel would do us a good job. We think that there are players who could come in and replace the likes of Stock, Mills and Wellens, but whether we could get them at the right price, l don't know.

"We'd prefer to keep the squad we've got because the team spirit last season was one of the big things which got us through our rocky patch."
