Rovers stars clock on for early shift

SEVERAL Doncaster Rovers players have reported back early for pre-season training.

The club have made their Cantley Park training ground facilities available this week for any player wanting to come in this week ahead of the official start of pre-season training next Monday.

Among the players to take advantage yesterday were midfielder Mark Wilson, last season's top scorer, Paul Heffernan, and Shaun McDaid. Others are expected to drop in during the week.

The club's youth team, who have already reported back for pre-season training, will play a friendly game against Boroughbridge on their return from Sweden next month, where they will be competing in the prestigious Gothia Cup.

Boroughbridge is the home town of former Rovers driver John Dodsworth, who died suddenly late last season.

The first of Rovers eight local Championship derbies next season - the game against Scunthorpe at Glanford Park on September 26 - will now kick-off at noon.

Rovers drew 2-2 on their last visit to Glanford Park in the 2006-07 season when both clubs were plying their trade in League One.

"With none of our league games clashing with Doncaster Races this season the only other changes to the fixtures will be the result of Sky Sports," said medIa manager Steve Uttley.

n Meanwhile, Kevin Blackwell wants to complete his summer recruitment drive by the time Sheffield United embark on their latest quest for promotion at Middlesbrough.

Having captured Lee Williamson from Watford earlier this month, Blackwell hopes to slide the second piece of the jigsaw - former West Ham winger Kyel Reid - into place before Monday's visit to Malta. But the remainder of the puzzle could prove more difficult to complete as the United manager finds his efforts to broker clean, quick deals thwarted by internal politics at rival clubs.

"The sooner we can get everything done, the better," Blackwell said.
