Rovers: Hayter blow hits Doncaster
DONCASTER Rovers' striker James Hayter faces several weeks on the sidelines after tearing a hamstring in last night's 2-1 Carling Cup defeatagainst Accrington Stanley, which went into extra-time at the Keepmoat.
Although an X-ray has ruled out a broken bone in his foot in Saturday's game at Preston, James Coppinger remains doubtful for Saturday's league game against Bristol City.
New signing Wayne Thomas will come into contention for a place in the side, however. Thomas, who signed an initial one-year deal yesterday, becomes the club's fifth signing following Billy Sharp, George Friend, Simon Gillett - a former team-mate at Southampton - and Josh Payne.
The 31 year-old, who had been looking for a longer contract, started his career with Torquay United.
He made made just over 100 appearances for the Devon club before joining Stoke City, for whom he made nearly 200 appearances.
Thomas became a fans' favourite during his time in the Potteries and was courted by a number of clubs when his contract expired with Stoke.
He eventually signed for Burnley, linking up again with manager Steve Cotterill, who he had played under at Stoke.
Although his first season was affected by injuries, Thomas was became a regular in the side and was installed as club captain.
Thomas then joined Southampton in a 1.2 million deal. He made 45 appearances at St. Mary's in two seasons before being released, along with 12 other players, at the end of last season.
Said Thomas: "I think Rovers were interested in me last season and my mate from Southampton, Simon Gillett, said it's a great team to play in with the type of football Sean O'Driscoll plays.
"I came up and trained, plus played in the the two home friendlies, and knew I could play here. I'm looking forward to bringing my experience to the side."
The Viking Supporters' Club, who have donated over 120,000 to the club in recent years, are holding their AGM at the Lakeside Bar at the Keepmoat Stadium at 11.30am on Saturday. Afterwards there will be a fans' forum featuring chairman John Ryan, Mickey Walker and Dave Morris.
Said VSC chairman Gareth Thomas: "We would like to see as many members renewing to demonstrate their support for the Rovers and for John's investment in the club."
