Resurgent Knights move into play-off place

DONCASTER Knights climbed into the top eight of the Championship for the first time this season after beating bottom club Birmingham & Solihull 36-7 at Castle Park to post their fourth successive win.

"We've finally started to climb the table after being in the bottom two for most of the season and that is very important because it gives the boys an extra incentive to keep going," said director of rugby, Lynn Howells.

"It was the first time this season that we'd gone into a game as favourites and, as much as the players try and get themselves up for the game, it is difficult.

"The first half was not a very good game of rugby.

"We fell into the trap of playing the way they wanted us to play. We were just chucking the ball around everywhere and we had no structure to our game.

"But the second half was a much better performance and it was more of what we are about and what we've been trying to do in recent weeks.

"The forwards were dominant and they laid the foundations for our victory.

"Our defence was good - though we were a bit annoyed with ourselves over their try because it was something that they didn't have to work hard for, which was disappointing.

"It was another win and it was good to see No 8 Chris Planchant play a full game in his first league start of the season, and prop Tom Davies, who has also been out injured, play for an hour. But it wasn't our best display of late and we are going to have to raise our game against Rotherham at Clifton Lane on Saturday."

The top eight sides in the Championship qualifiy for the end-of-season promotion play-offs. Any side below eighth goes into the relegation play-offs.
