Rachel doubles up to fire Belles to victory over Sunderland

A SECOND half brace by Rachel Williams secured Doncaster Rovers Belles a 2-1 FA Tesco Women's' National Division win over Sunderland at a windswept Keepmoat Stadium pitch 2.

Belles had the benefit of the blustery downfield wind in the first half and dominated the game territorially.

Williams and Precious Hamilton linked well for Belles down the right with the industrious Williams also ruling the roost in midfield.

The England international shot just wide from 20 yards on 15 minutes.

Skipper Vicky Exley tested impressive Sunderland keeper Rachel Laws with a well-stuck 25 yarder five minutes later.

Laws produced an excellent save from Williams' angled shot at the expense of a corner.

Striker Sarah Owen shot wide from the edge of the area with only the keeper to beat on the half-hour mark.

Little had been seen of the high-flying visitors in attack - central defender Claire Uttley showing up well for Belles along with right-back Chelsea Weston - until just before the break when keeper Marie Horihan did well to save from midfielder Kelly McDougall's powerful header. The visitors must have fancied their chances in the second half having the elements in their favour, but it was Williams who drew first blood in the final quarter. She added a second before Stephanie Bannon grabbed a stoppage time consolation. Belles are at Everton tomorrow night.
