No new bid for Matty

DONCASTER Rovers chairman John Ryan has refuted reports that Nottingham Forest have tabled a £2 million bid for defender Matt Mills.

Rovers rejected an approach by Forest for the 22-year-old centre-back last month,

"They have contacted us again but we've not had an official offer - it has been a Chinese whispers kind of thing," said Ryan last night.

"If they do make an official offer then we'll have a look at it. We'd obviously talk to the manager and to the player to see what's what.

"There is no doubt that Forest are interested in Matty and we'll have to see what happens; it's early days yet.

"Obviously they can afford to pay higher wages than us - and that is always a factor with players. But we are hopeful that Matty will stay with us.

"Forest may be a bigger club in terms of reputation but I feel that we might do better than them in the next few years.

"I am sure that if Matty keeps on playing well that he will get his big move unless we get promotion to the Premier League next season.

"If Burnley, who are similar club to ourselves in a lot of ways, can do it, so can we."

Mills has been a target for newly-promoted Birmingham for much of the year but Ryan said that the Blue had not spoken to him in recent weeks.

He also confirmed that Championship newcomers Leicester City had not followed up their initial approach for midfielder Richie Wellens.

Meanwhile, former Bristol City striker Steve Brooker has suffered a setback on the comeback trail.

Brooker, who has yet to play since signing for Doncaster Rovers during the January transfer window, has had to call a temporary halt to his running programme after suffering a problem with his achilles tendon.

But physio John Dickens, who is happy with how Brooker's rehabilitation is progressing following ankle surgery designed to increase stability in the joint, is hopeful that the problem will quickly be resolved and that he will be back running within a few days.

Brooker has set his sights on being fit enough to join in with most of the pre-season work when the squad report back on July 6 - though he is unlikely to feature in the first warm-up game at Armthorpe Welfare.

Fellow striker Stuart Elliott is also hoping to be fit for the start of pre-season training following an ankle operation.

His rehabilitation programme is going well and he has started his running programme.

Although Elliott faces a race against time to be fit to join in with the rest of the squad on their return, he is expected to be able to press his claims during the warm-up campaign.
