Proper player: Jon Bruce in action for the Eagles in 2004
SHEFFIELD Eagles’ legend Jon Bruce is set to return to the club to help develop a new generation of players.
‘Big Jon’ was a massive favourite of the supporters in the first five seasons after the club was reborn in the turmoil following the Huddersfield ‘merger’ in 1999. The prop forward was the first player to score a try for the new Eagles in their opening game at Lancashire Lynx and later captained the team.
Now Bruce, who occasionally plays as an amateur, has started working with the club’s junior players. He said: “I came down before Christmas and got involved in one session and it was really good. I got the buzz – it’s good when you tell the lads to do something and they pick it right away. I was impressed.”
A tough ‘old fashioned’ battling forward with a deceptive edge of handling skill Bruce played 130 games for the club before retiring as a professional at the end of the 2004 season.
Head coach Mark Aston said: “Jonny was one of the fans’ favourites when he was here as a player. He wants to be involved at this sort of level and we want to make sure that the kids coming through our system get the best.”
