New-look Dons urged to shine against Hawks

DONS fans will get their first look at the squad the club hope will win them promotion back to the Championship next season in tomorrow’s friendly against Hunslet Hawks at the Keepmoat Stadium (3pm).

Big-name signing Paul Cooke, who trained with his new team-mates for the first time last night, will not be involved and neither will hooker Kyle Kesik, who is serving a one-match ban carried over from last season.

Several of the other new faces may also sit the game out.

“There might be one or two who will do some extra fitness work on Sunday instead and play next week against Sheffield Eagles,” said Dons boss Tony Miller.

“I want the players who play to get a reasonable amount of time; I just don’t want them to play for 15 or 20 minutes.

“I just want to look at them as a team and see the areas that we need to work on and where we are at in terms of fitness and what the players can do. I also want to try some players in different combinations and out of their comfort zone. You never know when you will need a player to play out of position.

“Preparation has gone a lot better than last pre-season and we’ve not had any problems with the weather as we did last year. I’ve not got any preconceived ideas as to the team who will start our first competitive game in the Northern Rail Cup at Gateshead next month.

“We’ve got three friendly games over the next three weeks and all the players will be given a chance to show what they can do and to stake a claim and it is up to them to take it.”
