Morrison full of pre-season promise for Eagles coach

NEW signing Nev Morrison has forced himself to the front of the queue for a starting spot with Sheffield Eagles.

The winger or centre has been one of the standout performers in the two pre-season warm-up games.

“Nev has impressed, he looked comfortable and potentially I think he is going to be really strong,” said coach Mark Aston.

Morrison, 21, was signed from Hull FC after spending much of last season on loan at Doncaster where he scored nine tries in 19 games.

Aston added: “He can play wing or centre but centre is his best position I feel. Nev’s a young man with a lot of potential.”

The way half-backs Simon Brown and Dominic Brambani have started to work together in the pre-season games is another boost for Aston.

Brambani has scored three tries in the friendlies at Wakefield and Doncaster following his return to the club after a spell in Australia and two seasons at Dewsbury.

“Dom and Simon are getting that bit of continuity,” said Aston. “Simon has been working nights shift and was a bit fatigued at Doncaster but they will work together.”

Aston rated last Sunday’s 40-22 win at the Keepmoat when he used a squad of 22 as a good workout with three weeks to the start of the season.

He said: “It was a good test, Doncaster were strong. The hard thing with friendlies is giving everyone time on the pitch when you have a 22-man squad but it was certainly good.”

South Yorkshire rivalries are resumed when the clubs meet again three games into the new season in the group stages of the Northern Rail club at the Keepmoat on Sunday February 26.
