'Masterly' run gives Wright medal place

DONCASTER Athletic Club's Simon Wright produced a 'masterly' performance on his international cross-country debut at Birmingham at the weekend.

Representing England in the Home International Masters, the Doncaster runner finished third in the 45-49 age group and 14th overall in the 90 strong 35-49 race.

"I was the second England runner to count in the 45-49 age group team race, which we won, and I was pleased with that," said 45 year-old Wright.

"It was a bonus when I found out at the presentation evening that I finished third and also won an individual medal because I honestly thought that I'd finished fourth."

Wright clocked 29 minutes 36 seconds for the 8k race, contested over four 2k laps.

"I was pleased with the time – especially considering the wet and windy conditions," he told The Star.

"We were the third race on – after the women's and over-50s – and a lot of the corners had been churned up and where the puddles had been it was boggy.

"So it was just a question of trying to plough through it and look for the easiest route.

"Because I didn't know what to expect I just ran my own race and just tried to get into a good group and stick in there.

"I found myself running with another English runner, who I later found out had won the world age-group title in Finland, and I was up with him until I started to tire on the last half lap.

"It was a very proud moment lining up at the start in my England strip and now that I've had a taste of it I'd like to be involved again next year when there is the possibility of the race being held in the Republic of Ireland."
