Marauders learn their lesson to beat Hawks

MOORENDS-Thorne Marauders Under-11's went one better in the second Doncaster & South Yorkshire Service Area rugby league tournament on Sunday.

The Marauders won all their games 5-1 in the first tournament before coming up against very experienced Hillsborough Hawks who gave them a rugby lesson.

Their efforts in training during the week to quicken up their play-the-ball, support play and line defence, were apparent from the first whistle and they ran out winners in a closely fought game against West Doncaster.

They followed up with another strong win against a very enthusiastic Rossington Sharks.

The young Marauders started apprehensively against the bigger Sheffield Hillsborough Hawks side. Both sides defended vigorously in the first half and it was still 0-0 at the beak.

The second half was also dominated by defences, though the Marauders grew in confidence the longer the game went on.

Nathan Eason created the chance which caused the biggest upset of the day when he darted over from acting half-back in the dying seconds to send Lewis Blackham crashing over with three defenders on his back to score the winning try.

With only a couple of minutes before their next game against Hoyland Vikings, the young Marauders soon discovered the problem of going into a match in an over-confident mood, going 1-0 down early in the game. The Marauders fought back to 2-2 at half-time and edged into a 3-2 lead before conceding two late tries.

With a lesson learnt, the Doncaster youngsters went on to beat Rotherham Giants in their final game to end the competition on a winning note.

The next tournament has been switched to Rotherham Giants as the Rossington Miners' Welfare ground is unavailable.

Training for the Marauders juniors (years 4,5,6) is on Wednesday and Friday evenings at 6pm on the Moorends recreation ground, (Park Road gates). Years 7 & 8 are training at the same time on Friday evenings.

Coach Jim Welbourn said: "All new players are made very welcome and every player will get a game regardless of ability. Our aim is to progress the young lads ability in a controlled atmosphere where we concentrate firstly on the basic core skills with winning secondary – though always nice."
