Marauders beat rivals to cement top spot

MOORENDS-Thorne Marauders strengthened their grip on top spot in the National Summer Conference Yorkshire Premier Division after beating second-placed Cottingham Phoenix 36-8.

Eager to avenge an early-season 64-10 mauling at the hands of the visitors from Hull, Moorends came out with all guns firing and opened the scoring on five minutes when they moved the ball through four pairs of hands before Dave Knott crashed over in the corner.

Fearsome forward play by Craig Hookway, Gaz Everton, Kev Lake and Danny Hornsby created the position from which Gav Millward crashed over after 15 minutes.

Cottingham hit back when Dale Allinson off-loaded to Rob Brown who went over in at the corner on 20 minutes.

Cliffton Richardson came off the bench in his first game since an injury lay-off, and showed just why he is a crowd favourite with Recreation Ground supporters when he latched on to a long ball and ghosted into space and then raced in from 40 metres out.

Ryan Rafferty convered to make it 14-4.

Moorends maintained their tempo in the blistering heat, and when Cottingham infringed at the play-the-ball on 30 minutes their forwards set up the field position for Shaun Carver to crash over from a set piece for another converted try.

Four minutes later they sent the ball through several pairs of hands to send 16- year-old David Chowings in the corner.

Moorends increased their 24-4 interval lead within five minutes of the restart when Richardson burst on to a lovely ball and crashed over with three defenders on his back. Rafferty again added the extras.

Cottingham reduced the deficit on 57 minutes when Steve Johnson touched down.

Marauders hammered the final nail into the visitor's coffin on 75 minutes when outstanding loose-forward Craig Hookway produced the overlap before dummying his way over for a converted try by Ryan Rafferty.

Marauders are at home again against Scarborough Pirates on Saturday (2.30).
