VICTORY in today’s local derby against Rotherham Titans at Clifton Lane would secure Doncaster Knights their place in next month’s Championship play-offs.
Sixth-placed Knights need to win just one of their remaining four games to claim a top-eight spot.
But with seventh-placed Titans coming under pressure from both Bristol and Plymouth, team boss Lynn Howells knows that his side will have to play well to beat their local rivals.
“As a result of their defeat against Esher last weekend, and their 25-24 midweek defeat at bottom club Birmingham & Solihull, they still have to win a couple of their last three games,” said the Welshman. “They’ll fancy their chances against us because they are very good at home and they have taken some big scalps at Clifton Lane this season so it will be a difficult game for us.
“You know what you are going to get from Rotherham. It is going to be physical up front. They’ve played like that all season and on their tight pitch it will be that type of game, It will definitely be a confrontation between the two packs.
“But we’ve got to be confident.
“As I keep saying, if the right Doncaster team turns up then we are capable of beating most sides in this division.
“But we know that we will have to be on the top of our game to beat them because I think that only (leaders) Worcester have gone there and beaten them.
“But, as I always say whenever we play Rotherham, it’s a local derby and the form book goes out of the window; It is the team which makes the fewest mistakes which normally wins.
“That will be even more the case with the weather expected to be wet and windy.”
