Knights find reason to be optimistic after fifth straight defeat
DONCASTER Knights are still looking for their first Championship win of the season after slumping to a fifth successive defeat in Saturday's game against Nottingham at Castle Park.
But Knights boss Lynn Howells felt that he had more reason to be optimistic following the 23-7 defeat than the reversal at Moseley the previous week.
"It still wasn't good enough to give us a win, but it was a much better performance than the last couple of weeks," said the Welshman yesterday.
"Nottingham are a good side and are fourth in the league. We've played all the top sides bar Bristol and, when you are as badly hit by injuries as we have been all season, we could have done without such a demanding run of fixtures.
"We could do with an easier side just to get the roll going again.
"We need a result and Coventry, who we play host to on Saturday, are one of the sides that we have an opportunity to beat.
"Once you get yourselves in a hole, like we are in at the moment, it is very difficult to get out of it.
"We are finding that when you aren't playing well that the decisions often go against you as well.
"We played the whole of the second half with 14 men after having had back-rower Adam Kettle sent off and we must have played 30 minutes of the game with only 13 men due to other players being sin-binned.
"We also had winger Chris Briers sent off late on, which was a disgusting decision and I will be appealing against it."
Reflecting on the game, Howells added:"I thought that we were in with a chance when we only trailed 3-0 as we came up to half-time after playing into the strong wind, but then we had Adam sent off.
"The front five worked hard to keep us steady in the scrummage and in the line-outs and kept us in the game until about 15 minutes to go, by which time Nottingham had worn us out."
