Knights face tough start to campaign

DONCASTER Knights face a testing start to the inaugural Championship campaign with games against two of last season's top-three sides on successive weekends.

Knights, who finished fifth in National League One last season, will entertain third-placed Bedford at Castle Park on September 5 on the opening weekend of the new fully professional 12-team competition.

Knights suffered mixed fortunes in their two games against the Blues last season.

They produced one of their best-ever National League performances when romping to a 50-22 win at Castle Park in November but produced one of their worst displays of the season in the return in April - a defeat which effectively put paid to their hopes of pipping the Blues for third spot.

Knights then make the long trip to Exeter, where they drew 9-9 on the last day of the season.

Relegated Premiership side Bristol make their first ever visit to the town on October 24.

The changes to the draft fixtures mean that Knights' home games will not clash with South Yorkshire rivals Rotherham Titans.

On the downside, Knights - originally pencilled in to entertain Titans on Boxing Day - will now be away at Nottingham.

Scottish Premiership club Ayr will now be travelling to Doncaster for the opening round of the British and Irish Cup, which sees Cardiff replace Newport in their group.
