Infirmary League Switches to Twenty20
THE DONCASTER Evening Infirmary Crlcket League has become the first league in Yorkshire to convert to a Twenty-20 league.
The change was proposed by Adwick-le-Street at last weekend's AGM at Town Fields and received unanimous support on the night.
League matches in the popular competition, which runs from May to early August, have traditionally been contested over 16 eight-ball overs.
"It was decided to re-brand the league in order to attract more youngsters to the game," said secretary Steve Ward.
"Twenty-20 cricket is becoming very popular all over the world, and the league is proud to become one of the first recreational leagues in the country."
A special presentation of a cut glass decanter was made to Gerry Nolan, who retired after a 40 year stint as fixture secretary of the league, by The Star's Steve Hossack and former Doncaster Town skipper Nick Cowan.
"Gerry has held many positions within the league, as well as with other cricket organizations in Doncaster, and is a Life Member of the Yorkshire Cricket Association," said Ward.
"Fortunately, Gerry will not be lost to the league and has agreed to become the new league president.
"One of the objects of the League is to raise funds for the Doncaster Infirmary and chairman Tim Hawkins and Gerry presented a cheque for 500 to the Infirmary's Stroke Unit earlier in the day."
