Impressive Knights break home duck
DONCASTER Knights produced the shock result of the day in the Championship, beating Bristol 26-22 at Castle Park.
"I said in midweek that we'd have to be on the top of our game to have any sort of chance and we were," said Knights boss Lynn Howells.
"The biggest thing for us was to win at home for the first time this season after four successive defeats.
"But to do so against a side like Bristol, who were playing in the Premiership last season, was a real bonus for our supporters, who were superb.
"It was the most vocal Doncaster crowd since I have been here - and that includes the game against Leeds. It was a really good atmosphere.
"It was a magnificent all-round team performance and our victory was based on our defence and discipline.
"It was the first time this season that the penalty count has been in single figures. It is always going to give you a better chance of winning if you aren't giving three points away at regular intervals.
"As well as our defence beings solid, we also converted the chances, which we haven't been doing for most of the season.
"Bristol had a big pack and we knew that was their strength. But we had parity in the forwards - though I don't think that we were better than them - which gave us the chance to play a little.
"Even though the win at Plymouth, our first of the season, had boosted the players' confidence, I still think that they were doubting that they could beat Bristol before the game.
"But after ten to 15 minutes they found out all they had to do was play a bit of rugby and they could get a result."
Knights will give a run-out to seven players, who have all spent lengthy spells on the sidelines this season in an A-team friendly against a Combined Scottish XV at Castle Park tonight (5.30pm). Admission is free. Among the players taking part is club skipper Anthony Carter.
