Glen still king of the hill as Knights step up their training

THE Doncaster Knights players are well into their second week of training with much of the emphasis being on stamina and strength training. The big competitions so far have been the dreaded Armthorpe hill and the indoor rowing.

The hill, which is based on the old colliery slag heap, is a real test and the winner, as last year, was last season's skipper and our second oldest player Glen Kenworthy.

Modest Glen, who is a New Zealander, dismisses his success with the words "this is old school". Lock Glen is the unsung hero of the team, he is never far from the ball and his stamina enables him to keep going for the full 80 minutes of a game. And the rowing was, of course, Glen again whose technique and stamina put him ahead of the field.

The lads are facing a pretty frightening six week schedule with training on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and early Saturday mornings.

Then they have a week or so break before coming back for a further punishing schedule. I was speaking to Scott Pearson, our new fitness and conditionig coach from Premiership club Sale, earlier in the week and he has already made a big impact identifying each player's strengths and weaknesses and setting out their schedules accordingly.

On the injury front, centre Bevan Armitage, brother of England stars Dillon and Stefan, had a groin operation on Tuesday and prop Michael Cusack a knee operation on Wednesday.

Our physio Vicky is working miracles already. Michael's knee blew up over the weekend, Vicky made her diagnosis on Monday, had arranged a scan and consultancy with a surgeon for Tuesday and an operation for Wednesday morning. At lunchtime on Wednesday Michael was in the club on crutches almost ready to start his rehab work.

Interest in the British Lions tour of South Africa is increasing as the players settle into their games.

Although all three games to date have been won, two of them were very close and, as I write this column, I am getting ready to watch their fourth game against the (Natal) Sharks.
