Featherstone sign up Dons star Briggs

DONCASTER Rugby League Club's hopes of pulling away from the Co-operative Cham pionship relegation zone, suffered a setback last night when highly-rated stand-off Kyle Briggs joined Featherstone Rovers.

No transfer fee was involved, but Briggs' departure will help to ease the Dons' financial problems.

One of the stars of last season's promotion-winning team, the former Leeds junior had an outstanding game when the two sides met at Featherstone in a pre-season friendly.

"Featherstone were obviously impressed by Kyle that day and have continued to keep tabs on him," said Dons' head coach Tony Miller last night.

"It is a blow to be fair; I didn't want him to go. But we've got to balance the books in today's harsh financial climate.

"It's unfortunate but that is the way of the world at this moment in time.

"I don't think that he wanted to go and I think that he would like to have stayed. He was a bit emotional when he came down to tonight's training session to say goodbye to the lads.

"I wish him well and I hope that it works out for him.

"Kyle has not played as well as he did last season playing alongside Luke Gale (now at Harlequins) and his form has been a bit patchy at times.

"But he's still a quality player and he's got a good kicking game."
