FA in Ryan probe

THE Football Association have launched an enquiry into the last month's Yorkshire and Derbyshire regional election.

Barnsley director Barry Taylor pipped Doncaster Rovers chairman John Ryan 9-8 to retain his seat on the FA Council.

But the circumstances surrounding his victory are to be investigated following the threat of legal action by Ryan.

Ryan demanded that the ballot should be taken again.

He claimed Taylor had used tactics that broke FA rules when allegedly sending out literature promoting his own campaign along with photocopies of the official ballot paper.

A long-seving member of the Council, Taylor, denies contravening strict FA rules on voting procedure.

But a national newspaper claims it has seen proof that Taylor did send out a pamphlet promoting his campaign along with a photocopy of the ballot paper.

Ryan, who was unavailable for comment, has reportedly been informed that a complaint has been forwarded to the Football Regulator.

Meanwhile, former Rovers striker Gareth Taylor is set to join Wrexham.

The 36-year-old, who was released by Rovers at the end of last season, will sign a 12-month contract with the Welsh club when he returns from holiday.

Taylor's qualities are well known to Red' boss Dean Saunderswho he played alongside for Wales and Sheffield United

"Gareth's a good signing," said Saunders. "We've got an experienced striker and it's not a problem that he's 36 because you're only as old as you feel.

"He played 16 games in the Championship last season, he scores goals, he's strong in the air and he will help bring on other players.

"It's vital we have good characters in the dressing room when the right words need to be said.

"Gareth's a good, honest professional and he's a good friend of mine."
