Ex-Mayor Winter link to Dons takeover
A BUSINESS consortium put together by former Mayor of Doncaster, Martin Winter, would appear favourite to take over the struggling Dons.
Winter, who stepped down as the town's elected Mayor earlier this month, is known to have registered an interest with the administrator currently seeking a suitable new owner - though he is not believed to have made a formal offer to take charge.
The former Dons hooker has reportedly put together a group of at least ten business people willing to take over the running of the Championship club.
"If that is the case then Martin is the man to save the club and take it forward," said director of rugby, Carl Hall, last night.
"He has the necessary leadership experience and knows all about budgets and things like that.
"I have been working hard behind the scenes trying to put a consortium together and I've had the support of several local businessmen.
"I came up with a package which would see the club go back to basics and players paid match payments only for the next three to five years.
"We would have targeted a mid-table spot in Championship One next season with the aim of getting back, and being competitive, into the Championship in that period - possibly working in conjunction with a supporters' trust. I have informed the administrator of my interest but will now be withdrawing so as to leave the way open for Martin."
Hall, meanwhile, confimed that the club's derby game against Sheffield Eagles on Sunday week - scheduled to be played at the Keepmoat Stadium - will now be played at Featherstone.
