Eagles show their promise against Super League ‘Cats

SHEFFIELD Eagles put in an impressive display against the Super League’s Wakefield Wildcats in their first pre-season match last night.

Coach Mark Aston included eight of his signings in a squad of 21. Against full-time players the Eagles dominated possession for long periods.

A mistake in defence gave Wakefield the lead with a try from Matty Wildie but swiftly Brambani followed up a Brown kick to level.

Brown set up the second try for back rower Sam Scott and Brown added both goals. Props Alex Rowe and Liam Higgins came off the bench to keep the Eagles going forward.

They held the lead until four minutes from the break when tries from James Davey and Sam Fuller and a goal from Gareth Moore to add to Danny Ansell’s earlier effort edged the Wildcats 16-12 ahead.

In spite of frequent substitutions the Eagles stayed together as a team and held Wakefield after the restart. Brambani continue his impressive return with two 40-20 kicks. Pressure told and Frankie Mariano extended the Wildcats lead. Eagles came back with an Alex Szostak try and goal from Brown.

The revival was short-lived as Wildie got his second try but again the Eagles came back with new signing Lewis Straughn diving in from Brown’s pass before the half-back added the goal to cut the home team’s lead to two points. Two Wakefield tries in the final five minutes made the match safe.
