Eagles old boys soar to a comfortable win

DONCASTER Danum Eagles 'old boys' soared to a comfortable win over the Scotland Under-18s side in the annual Eagles Invitation Tournament last weekend.

A number of players, currently studying in the States, flew back from America to play in the two-day event held at Danum School sports hall.

The current Eagles' squad, who finished runners-up in the 2008-2009 National Under-18s Midlands Premier League, lost out to the Scots.

Both the Scotland and Wales teams used the tournament as part of their preparation for the forthcoming Small Nations Cup.

Eagles Under-16s, who finished top of the Northern Conference last season with an unbeaten record, beat a North of England Under-17s side.

With all but one of the under-18s side leaving the school this summer – Paul Walsh, Brendan Smith and Josh Metcalf all going to high school in America where they hope to further develop their basketball skills – the team are expected to provide the bulk of next season's senior squad.

The tournament, organised by the Eagles' American-born coach and former Doncaster Panthers favourite Bob Martin, also included a slam dunk competition.

It is hoped that an Irish national team will join Scotland and Wales in the 2010 event.
