BEFORE the game Eagles’ coach Mark Aston asked for a professional performance against the amateurs of Leeds Met – he got it with 15 tries thrown in.
It was just the confidence-boosting work-out the Eagles needed as they won this Carnegie Challenge Cup third round game.
“We were very disciplined and we stuck to the plan for the first time probably this year,” he said. “I’m happy, we took the shackles off and expressed ourselves and scored some quality tries – you could see the confidence oozing back.”
Half-back Simon Brown controlled the Eagles play and was supported by Dane McDonald and Joe Hirst with forward Nick Turnbull making a strong return to the Eagles after two seasons out of the pro game.
Leeds Met started brightly but as the game settled down the Eagles’ greater strength and experience took over and the students struggled to get effective possession.
Eagles took the lead after five minutes with centre Corey Hanson going in from Brown’s pass. Brown added a touchline conversion – the first of 11 successful kicks. After that the tries kept coming with Jack Howieson powering over and Peter Green sweeping in.
Menzie Yere raced 70 metres to the line after a poor kick from Leeds was collected by Danny Mills whose offload set up the break.
Alex Szostak added two tries in four minutes using his power to spin across the line each time.
Prop Alex Rowe blasted his way down the centre for a 40-metre solo try and as the half ended fullback Jamie Cottle went in for a try and with Brown’s goal it was 44-0 at the break.
The students’ forwards had more possession after the restart but Eagles didn’t relax their grip.
A 40-20 kick by Brown set up a move that ended with Tim Bergin going in. The 50-point mark was passed by the Eagles when Joe Hirst swept in under the posts.
Danny Mills added a touchdown with Henderson and second tries for Yere and McDonald.
