Double award boost for Dons
DONCASTER RLFC’s Tony Miller and Mick Heptinstall have become the first head coach and assistant coach combination outside of Super League to have gained the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) Award at Level 3.
“This is a tremendous achievement for the Dons’ coaching duo as there are currently only 36 coaches who are qualified at this particular level in rugby league,” said a club spokesman.
As part of the award, coaches are required to attend four workshops and five days of seminars as well as take part in such as practical activities and lectures.
Topics include performance analysis, benchmarking and profiling, planning and periodization, sports psychology, physiology, the coaching process and lifestyle management.
There is also a technical day run by elite coaches and deliverers of this day have included the likes of Steve McNamara, Richard Agar, John Kear, Francis Cummins and Andy Hay.
Coaches then have to complete a range of assessment tasks, for example benchmarking of all positions for the environment they work in - Super League, Championship and reserve grade..
They also have to profile two players, prepare an action plan for them, and work with them to improve their performance.
Other tasks require the coaches to explore their coaching philosophy and to evaluate their own performance. They are observed coaching and finally they have to sit an examination.
