Dons hit 50 against lively amateurs

THE Dons ended their pre-season warm-up campaign on a winning note with a 50-4 victory over a Doncaster Amateur Select at Wheatley Hills RUFC’s ground.

The Dons’ extra class and fitness levels shone through in a one-sided second half after they had been made to work hard for their 12-0 interval lead in a game which also served as a testimonial for long-serving winger Dean Colton.

Dons took an early lead with a try by Carl Hughes, converted by centre Lee Waterman. Hughes also created the position from which winger Tom Hodson scored the Dons’ second converted try on 18 minutes. With stand-off Mark Roach prompting well, and such as big Sean Carver running strongly, the Select side enjoyed a sustained spell of pressure without being able to gain any advantage.

Kyle Bibb ran strongly to score in the corner within minutes of the restart.

The Select side opened their account on 48 minutes with a try by scrum-half Ryan Rafferty.

Hodson showed good pace to race in from about 35 metres. Waterman again added the conversion from wide out.

Hodson again showed his pace on a long run down the right but elected to send Colton over from close range.

Colton set Hodson away down the left, and was on was on hand to take his try-scoring pass.

The Select side, had a second try disallowed before Hodson completed his hat-trick following some good handling down the line.

Mike Emmett crossed for the penultimate try with Fawcett capping a hard-working display with a try. Waterman landed his fifth conversion.

Doncaster Select (squad): Holt, Reed, Purnell, Green, Carey, Roach, Rafferty, Hemmings. Lake, Palmer, Tesh, Hornsey, Roberts, Evans, Armstrong, Carver, Stayley, Archer.

Dons (squad): Butterfield, Colton, Crowther, Waterman, Hodson, Hughes, Castle, Kesik, Bibb, Lawton, Robinson, Emmett, Welsh, Ely, O’Loughlin, Kelly, Sampson, Powley.
