Dons blow

THE Dons hopes of a major boost in terms of personnel ahead of Saturday's Champ-ionship game against Widnes Vikings, suffered a setback yesterday when head coach Tony Miller managed to sign only one of the players he was chasing,

Two of his targets - an amateur prop and Featherstone stand-off Matt Handforth - cited work commitments as the reason for not joining the South Yorkshire side.

Handforth, however, did express an interest in joining the club next season.

Better news for Miller, though, was the arrival of young Huddersfield full-back Tommy Griffiths at last night's training session.

"He trained well and looked useful," said Miller.

Miller has also been told that young Sheffield Eagles hooker Kyle Keswick has been cleared to join the club on loan from next week.

Utility back Scott Jones is keen to try to prevent the Vikings from plundering the spoils in Saturday's game at the Stobart Stadium.

The 19 year-old is hoping that he did enough in Sunday's 78-8 defeat against Sheffield Eagles at Featherstone to retain the No 1 shirt.

The son of former Castleford and Dons star Kevin Jones, the youngster replaced injured full-back Shaun Leaf after just six minutes.

It was the former Toll Bar junior's first outing since the first league game of the season at Barrow.

"I didn't have a good game that day, though I was playing on the wing, which isn't my best position," said Jones.

"I never expected to be out of contention for so long, but I just knuckled down in the Under-21s .

"Although I had a few off-days, and picked up a couple of little injuries, I felt that I did okay and feel I am over my bad patch. I was delighted to get on early in the match - though I obviously felt sorry for Shaun - and I thought that I did okay.

"I was obviously glad to be back in the squad but it was difficult in view of what's been going on and with so many good players having left.

"Despite that, there was a good spirit in the dressing room before the game.

"I thought that we competed well for 20 minutes and caused them some problems, but after that we were defensively quite poor.

"We are letting teams score two or three tries in quick succession and we need to react better when we concede a try.

"We know that it will be tough at Widnes because they are a full-time club and have a lot of good players, but I'm sure we'll be giving it a good go."
