Doncaster duo just out of top three in 10k

VISITING athletes ran away with the top prizes in last night's 24th annual Sentry Doors Askern 10k road race.

Steve Worthington (Lancaster & Morecambe) marked his first run in the popular event by showing the 513-strong field a clean pair of heels to take the honours in a time of 31 minutes 13 seconds.

Another race newcomer, Andy Ward (Clowne) was runner-up in 31.23. Salford's Pulmanhi Bangani (31.38) was third.

Doncaster Athletic Club's John Wanjohi was the first local finisher in fourth place in a time of 32.08. Clubmate John Guveya was eighth in a time of 33.47.

Doncaster's Simon Wright - the first vet-40 to finish - was tenth in 34.07.

New Askern member, Simon Newton, flew the flag for the promoting club when claiming 14th place in a time of 34.51.

Doncaster's Kev Newman (35.12) was 17th overall and first vet-50.

Club-mate Chris Moran was 23rd in a time of 35.51. Askern's Pete Burke (36.40) was third in the vet-40 race.

Doncaster's Bill Rigby was the first vet-75 to finish.

Doncaster (Wanjohi, Guveya, Wright) won the men's team prize.

Kirsteen Young (Leeds City), went one better than last year when winning in the women's race in 36.41. Jayne Purchase (Doncaster) was 80th overall in a time of 39.50 and winner of the vet-35 prize.

Doncaster-based Rotherham Harrier Janet Hindley was 132nd overall in a time of 41.58 and first vet-40 home.

Doncaster won the women's team race with Purchase, Louise Gill (243rd) and Kay Tait (247th) being the three runners to count.
