Doncaster chase Cooke

Championship One club Doncaster are closing in on a deal to sign former Hull and Hull KR favourite Paul Cooke.

The 30-year-old Cooke, who scored the match-winning try for Hull in the 2005 Challenge Cup final, has been out of the game for over year after being released by Wakefield but is hoping to return with Doncaster.

The Dons say they will give Cooke a full-time job in their development department, along with match terms, if fans and sponsors match their offer of £600 a month.

So far they have pledged £475 per month and the club are hoping they can reach their target in time to finalise a deal with Cooke tomorrow.

Chairman John Scarrow said: “We held a very positive meeting with Paul yesterday and he’s still very keen to join the Dons.

“We are willing to match the £600 per month target pledge to secure the services of Paul. With a total monthly income of £1,200, this should allow us to offer him a part-time role within our successful community development team.

“Paul has made a commitment to give his response to the club this coming Monday. The outcome of Paul’s response will then be discussed at the advisory group’s meeting on Tuesday evening.

“I must say Paul is in tremendous shape and his attitude is first class. I’m sure he will be an asset to the club, both on and off the field, and his experience and qualities as a player will help us push for a return to the Championship.”

Meanwhile, another former Hull player, utility back Jordan Tansey, is poised to sign for Championship club York.

The City Knights are thought to be close to agreeing terms with Tansey, the 25-year-old former Leeds, Sydney Roosters, Hull and Crusaders full-back or half-back who was sacked by Hull a year ago for a third breach of club discipline in 12 months.

York are also set to sign former Bradford and Harlequins forward Michael Worrincy, who is back in England after a spell in Australia with Penrity Panthers.
