Doncaster RLFC will be bidding to leave the Championship on a winning note in tonight’s game at Whitehaven (6.30pm).

The Dons lost 41-17 on the same ground on Easter Monday and have lost heavily on all three previous visits to Cumbria this season.

“I think it’s fair to say that we owe the Cumbrian teams one,” said head coach Gary Thornton.

“It won’t be easy not least because Whitehaven could mathematically go down if they lose heavily and Hunslet pick up a big win at Batley.

“But if we play like we did in the win over Dewsbury then there is no reason why we can’t pick up another win.”

Second-rower Ben Musolino is fit again, as is wing/centre Sam Doherty. Thornton is naturally reluctant to change a winning team.

“I will pick the team which I feel will give us the best chance of winning the game while at the same time taking into consideration who will be leaving and who will be staying,” he said.

Musolino is returning home and loose-forward Mike Emmett has yet to agree a new deal and there are fears tonight will be his last game for the club.

Australian prop Matt Groat is another set to bow out.

“I’d love to have kept Matt and built a pack around him because he has been tremendous for us,” said Thornton.

“But he only just missed out on joining a Super League club so you can understand him not wanting to drop from Championship level.”
