Former Dons player-coach Paul Cooke is set to feature in what could be his last ever game at the Keepmoat Stadium in Sunday’s must-win Championship Shield clash against Featherstone Rovers.

Cooke joined Rovers several weeks after parting company with the Dons and was recently joined at the West Yorkshire club by former Doncaster team-mate Steve Snitch.

“I think it will be strange for both of them playing against us – particularly Paul,” said current Dons head coach Gary Thornton.

“I’m sure he’s got a great affiliation for the place and I know that he and (CEO) Carl Hall are still pretty close.

“It will be a tough experience for him but he’s a professional and he’ll come and do a job for Featherstone Rovers and he won’t worry too much about us during the game.

“He may still have a bond with the players he coached and played alongside, but once the whistle goes all that goes out of the window for the next 80 minutes or so. The same thing will apply to Steve.

“I hope the fans will give both Paul and Steve a warm reception. I certainly hope that they’ll remember the good stuff that both men did for the club while they were here.

“It must have been a fantastic experience for the fans when the club finished fourth in the league and you’ve got to commend Paul in particular for the job he did as player-coach.”
