Doncaster RLFC claimed only their second win of 2015 when beating second-placed Dewsbury Rams in their penultimate Championship Shield game.

Happy though head coach Gary Thornton was with the 33-20 win over the club’s bogey side in their last home game of the season, he admitted it had come too late to save the relegated Dons.

“Where was that performance (when we needed it) eight weeks ago?” he asked.

“That said, obviously I’m delighted with the result. We gave ourselves a good platform in the first half scoring three tries and defending tough and forcing Dewsbury into making errors.

“We knew that they would come at us in the second half and they did – they aren’t where they are in the table for nothing.

“I was nervous when they got it back to 22-14 because they had got a roll on and with 15 minutes to go and only eight points to defend I was nervous.

“But we weathered the storm and went on to win. It shows great team spirit. We had a bit of luck at times but we’ve had our share of bad luck so we’ll take it.”

He added: “We scored some good tries. We’d worked really hard in midweek to get that shape and it just shows the difference when you have two natural half-backs.”
