Clive Griffiths insists any competitive needle between him and Paul Cooke will be saved for later in the Championship season.

Griffiths and Cooke have spent six months side by side as coaches at promotion-chasing Doncaster Knights.

But this weekend they go head to head in the other rugby code when the Welshman brings his North Wales Crusaders side to the Keepmoat for a pre-season friendly with Cooke’s Dons.

Griffiths was in playful mood when discussing Sunday’s clash with the Free Press and says the banter with Cooke will continue into next week.

“It’s rare that you get an encounter like this across the codes and I’m sure we’ll enjoy it,” he said.

“There’s not a great deal of meaning other than setting us both up for the big kick off a week later. It’ll be different when we come back here in the league in April. But this will be a good exercise for us, particularly with having friendlies called off due to the weather. We need to get some game time into the lads and I’m sure that’s how Cookey is looking at it too.

“He just needs to make sure he doesn’t sit on the wrong bench!

“And my lad Owain will be playing. If he’s done any damage there will be trouble – particularly if it’s Cookey that’s done it!”

Sunday’s clash kicks off at 2.30pm.
