Cunningham dual deal great coup for Dons

DONCASTER Rugby League Club boss Tony Miller is tipping the club’s latest signing Liam Cunningham to make a big impact this season.

The 22 year-old, the eldest of the Cunningham brothers on Hull FC’s books, has joined the Championship One club on a season-long dual-registration.

Cunningham, who captained Hull’s Under-20s team last season, made his Super League debut for the KC Stadium-based club in 2010 but has found it hard to force his way into the star-studded Hull side on a regular basis.

“I approached Lee Radford (Hull FC assistant coach) about a loan move as I fancied a new challenge and Doncaster was the ideal club for me,” said Cunningham.

“I played against Doncaster for Hull in last year’s pre-season friendly so I know first hand what a great venue the Keepmoat Stadium is.

“I already know Lee Waterman and Nathan Powley being an East Hull lad which helps, and I used to play alongside Fran Welsh at Hull’s academy. I spoke to a few lads at training last week and they all said we’ve got a strong squad with a good mixture of youth and experience and we should go well this season.”

Said Miller “It is a fantastic signing for the Dons and our squad is looking very promising ahead of our National Rail Cup campaign.

“Liam is dangerous with ball in hand; he’s a good defender, has bags of pace and comes with a great reputation from East Yorkshire.

“He’s also extremely versatile and can play in a number of positions including centre, back row or loose forward.

“I’d like to thank the coaching staff at Hull FC for making this dual registration a possibility - I’m sure Liam will be a great asset to the club.”
