Cunningham beats fellow international
FLYWEIGHT Jason Cunningham was named best Doncaster Plant Works boxer on the Doncaster Lions dinner show at the Dome
Cunningham beat fellow England international Usman Malik (Merlin ABC) in what was judged the bout of the night.
Cunninham's stablemate Danny Hughes also outpointed Jamie Sampson in their welterweight contest.
There was little between two boxers of contrasting styles in the first two rounds, but Hughes stamped his authority on proceedings in the final round to claim a majority decision.
Plant light-heavyweight Mick Taylor, who has now lost four of his 12 bouts, suffered a unanimous points defeat at the hands of Trinity's Ray Chitburn.
A late replacement, Chitburn proved too big and too strong for Taylor and claimed his ninth win in 13 contests.
"Taylor tried and tried and he had some success but he was beaten by a better boxer on the night," said Plant's head coah Ken Blood.
The fast improving Kyle Fox, who forced the pace throughout, avenged a defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough's Sam Edwards earlier in the year when outpointing him in the return in their junior 65kg contest.
"Fox is a 100 per cent better boxer than he was earlier in his career and he has now almost won as many as he has lost," said Blood.
Jake Westlake was named the most promising boxer of the night after picking up a unanimous points win over James Hylton in their junior 60kg contest.
"It was a fast and furious bout between two very good lads with Westlake just shading every round," said Blood.
Plant's Thomas Harty produced an impressive display against Middlesbrough's Tom Msphosa in their junior 51kg clash.
"My lad lost to Msphosa, who is one of the best boxers in the country at his weight, on his club's show six weeks ago and lost on a majority decision again," said Blood.
"It was close but I felt that Harty had done enough to take it.
Nathan McGarry (Plant) failed to avenge a defeat against George Drinkwater (Roache ABC) in their return 42kg contest. "He didn't box as well as he can and he let the other lad dictate the fight," said Blood.
