Craig upset by manner of Dons defeat

CRAIG Lawton's long-awaited return to action in Sunday's Championship game against Batley at Featherstone proved a painful experience.

It wasn't the shoulder injury he picked up in the National League Two play-off final which hurt the 28 year-old Doncaster-born player which hurt Lawton - it was the size of the 70-6 defeat by Batley Bulldogs.

"You don't mind getting beat if you play well and get beaten by a better team," said Lawton, now the club's longest-serving player.

"It's the manner in which you get beat which is important and Sunday's defeat was very disappointing. Our discipline was poor - especially in the first half - and we tried to force too many passes in the second.

"We had a few new lads, and both Shaun Leaf and myself had been out a long time, so there were a lot of new faces out there. Hopefully we will all stick together and start to gell."

One of the few plus points to emerge from Sunday's match as far as Lawton was concerned was the fact that his shoulder stood up the rigours of the game.

"The shoulder felt okay and I had no problem with it," said Lawton. "It was just a bit stiff."

Lawton, who played much of last season in the front row, played centre on Sunday.

"It didn't come as that much of a surprise on the day as Tony (coach Miller) had hinted on Friday night that he might play me there," he said.
