THE Dons have named back-rower Craig Robinson as their new captain.

Robinson, who needed seven stitches in a cut ear during Sunday’s 26-12 pre-season win over Hunslet at the Keepmoat, was the unanimous choice of coaching staff and players.

Said Dons’ boss Tony Miller: “I’d spoken about the captaincy with the other coaches and Craig was a popular choice.

“I then asked the players to think about what makes a good captain and then write down in secret their choice and Craig came out top of the poll. I think he’ll be a good choice.”

Although the club’s doctor told The Star that Robinson would be fit to face Sheffield Eagles in Sunday’s warm-up game at the Keepmoat Stadium, Miller says that he won’t be playing him.

“He doesn’t need to prove himself,” he said. Miller was delighted by how his new-look squad shaped up in the victory over the Hawks, who play a division above the Dons, but he admits that his charges will probably have to step up against Eagles.

“Obviously you want to win every game you play but results aren’t that important in these sort of games,” he said.

“It’s not like I’m going to pick a team which I think is the best. I’ll be making a couple of changes and everybody is going to get chance to show what they can do in the next couple of games.

“Enthusiasm, and ability to play for 80 minutes, were things that we targeted last weekend and I’ll be looking for us to replicate those qualities against the Eagles.

“If we win, we win, if we don’t then as long as we perform and everyone gives their best that is all I can ask.”
