Come to meet Knights squad

THE Knights squad, along with staff from our Charity DIRECT, will be out and about at Lakeside this coming Saturday and Sunday publicising the club and our forthcoming fixtures and helping to sell season tickets. I am sure they would be delighted to talk to you if you are there and you bump into them.

Stuart Corsar, the Scottish prop we signed from Rotherham during the close season, is currently in Romania representing Scotland "A" in the IRB Nations Cup and earlier this week he played against Uraguay.

On the other side of the world, our two Tongans, prop Toma Toke and centre Hudson Tonga'uiha, are both playing for their country in the Pacific Rim Tournament. We are just hoping that they all come back without any serious injuries.

Yesterday we signed Steve Lawrie, a young hooker from Scotland, who Lynn coached when he was at Edinburgh.

He is a big lump of a lad and the competition between him, last season's regular Steve Boden and up and coming Academy and Yorkshire Under-20s hooker Tom Doughty is going to be fascinating.

A couple of seasons ago we were accused of having a Welsh mafia – and I suppose we still have really with Anthony Carter, Simon Grainger, Roger Davies, Tomas Davies, Bryn and Nicky Griffiths.

But this is now rivalled by a Scottish mafia with Steve joining fellow countrymen Corsar, Neil Cochrane, Dougie Flockhart, Ali Warnock and Steve McColl.

Expect haggis, kilts and pipes to be the theme when we entertain Magners League and Heineken Cup side Glasgow Warriors in a pre-season friendly on Friday August 21st!

Next week we are hosting our third Business2Business lunch when our speaker will be Darren Gough.

Darren needs no introduction to anyone as his claim to fame encompasses the interests of males and females alike.

Not only is Darren a legend to rank alongside the other cricketing greats but, more recently, he has made his name as a star of the dancefloor and the TV screen.

There are still a few places left which can be booked by ringing the club on 01302 831388 and pressing the sales number when prompted.

This Saturday sees the first Test between the British Lions and South Africa, and what an exciting game it promises to be. The unbeaten Lions face the world champions in their own backyard and the opinion of Doncaster Knights director of rugby, Lynn Howells, is that this is a game they just have to win for two reasons.

Firstly, the Springboks have not played together for sometime and, secondly, the two remaining tests are at altitude and will be much harder for the Lions.

Lynn, who is travelling to South Africa for one of the tests, has a keen interest in the Lions as he has coached some of the players while at Edinburgh and Cardiff.
