Club riders in 55-mile 'chain gang' round-trip

A GROUP of 11 Harworth and District Cycling Club members took part in their latest club ride on Sunday.

Their destination was the Field Gate Centre organic farm shop and cafe at Fishlake which one of the club riders remembers visiting some years back. The party set off in a northerly direction through Bawtry and Misson and along the banks of the River Idle to Sandtoft where they practised chain gang riding, otherwise known as the through and off method of group riding, as the head and cross winds were really strong.

The riders turned west towards Hatfield Woodhouse and then continued through Thorne on the A614 and turned off on Ferry Road just north of Thorne.

When they arrived at their cafe stop it turned out to that it had closed down and looked as if it had been that way for some time - so much for club riders' memories!

Luckily they had a back-up plan that involved going to Askern a further seven miles up the road. The return journey took them through Moss and past the derelict power station at Thorpe Marsh and onto Barnby Dun, Armthorpe, along Warning Tongue Lane and Rossington. With the wind at their backs a round trip of 55 miles was concluded.
