Bob Westerdale talks with Jack Howieson
Jack Howieson, aged 30, is a prop forward for Sheffield Eagles since the club reformed in 2001. The Scotland international is the longest serving player at the club having played in 236 matches.
What have you been doing today?
I have been working all morning for my sports coaching company called ‘Playball Yorkshire Ltd.’ I have been coaching children aged two to nine years old general sport and movement skills.
Who is your inspiration and why ?
There isn’t really one person that inspires me. I generally try to work hard and be successful to provide the best for my family and make them proud of me.
Which sports star did you admire when you were growing up?
When I was growing up I was a fan of most sports. But off the top of my head, I liked watching Wigan play in the 1990s. Jason Robinson, Andy Farrell, Gary Connelly etc.
What’s your favourite other sport ?
When I’m not watching rugby league I like rugby union. I always watch all the major events in all sports, like the Olympics, the Ashes, World Cup, etc.
Who is the most famous person in your phone?
Wayne Knight (actor from the Jurassic Park movie, who stole the dinosaur eggs), he is my wife’s uncle.
When was the last time you cried?
When my daughter Alana was born on December 15, but it was okay because nobody saw.
Who or what are you most proud of?
My children Max, Chloe and Alana. They make me proud everyday for stupid little things.
What’s the best piece of advice you have received?
Work hard and be nice to people.
When did you know you were good at what you do?
I have always found sports quite easy to pick up and was a good all round sports person at school, although it wasn’t until the age of about 16 I realised that rugby league suited me the best.
What one item do you take with you wherever you go?
My iPad, it’s sad but I could not live without it now.
What is the most nervous you’ve ever been?
One hundred per cent, that has to be my wedding day. It didn’t help that Emma was an hour late. I think it was that so much time and money was spent organising one day that I didn’t want anything to go wrong.
Do you ever doubt yourself?
Yes, I have doubts everyday. I think that is normal but, generally when I start to doubt myself it drives me harder to succeed.
What is your view on social networks like Twitter and Facebook?
I used to hate them, but starting to come around. Just started a Twitter account.
How do you relax away from sport ?
Spending time with my family, eating and drinking.
Where was your last holiday - and would you go again ?
I went to Egypt, very hot and a good break. It was the second time we have been, so we might not return.
Do you cook? If so what’s your favourite - if not who provides that favourite meal?
I can cook, but generally my wife does most of the cooking. The main reason is she is better and in during the evenings.
What was the last book you read?
I like to read autobiographies, but I don’t read that much to be honest.
If you weren’t doing what you do, what would you do?
I think I would probably be a teacher, a fireman or a policeman. Something along those lines.
Tell our readers in your own words why you think we’re interested enough to interview you?
I have no idea. But you have interviewed me so there must be something. Let’s hope the readers agree.
Favourite TV programme?
I go through phases of watching box sets or series on the Internet. At the moment I’m into Dexter on box set and the TV show ‘Coppers.’

Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 12:47 PMAlthough we are always grateful for coverage of our sport it would be preferable if Mr Westerdale had done some basic research, or even spoken to Jim Collins! Sheffield Eagles was re-formed in late 1999, not 2001. Perhaps I am being unfair but such an error does not inspire any confidence in any future offerings from Mr Westerdale.
