Athletics club one match from promotion in North of England League

DONCASTER Athletic Club retained the leadership of the North of England Track & Field League 3EC Division despite finishing runners-up to Scunthorpe in the penultimate meeting of the season at Quibel Park.

The meeting was switched to the Scunthorpe track, which will also host the final meeting, due to sub-standard field equipment at Cleethorpes.

Doncaster, whose lead at the top was pegged back to two points, will win the title if they finish no lower than second and secure promotion if they finish no lower than third.

Despite lacking in numbers - particularly in the women's team, Doncaster were determined that they were not going to relinquish top spot without a fight.

In the field events, seasoned campaigners Steve Minnikin weighed in with wins in the A hammer (45.72m), B shot (10.31m), and B discus (31.78m), and Darren Askew won the A shot (11.56m) and came second in the A discus (35.13m).

Lewis Wilson (3.0m) and Troy Kennedy (2.80m) won the A & B pole vault event respectively. Kennedy also came second in the 110m hurdles (18.3 sec), as well as picking up valuable points in the high jump and javelin.

Under-17s athlete Rob Konstandelos celebrated his senior debut with an excellent second spot in the A 3K steeplechase (12m.00s), as did Les Grant in the B string. Grant also competed in three other events. Liam Davies tackled five events, gaining valuable points and showing true team spirit.

Sprinters Jamie Brough (11.3) and Chris Watts (11.6) won the 100m A & B races respectively in addition to helping Doncaster to finish second in the 4 x 100m relay.

Pete Andrews, making his first appearance of an injury-hit season, won the B 800m (2.15.7) and came second in the B 1500m (5.28.6). Myles St. Clair, also making his senior debut, won the B 400m (54.0) as well as running excellent legs in both the sprint relays.

Jackie Cawthorne won the B 100m (13.6), came third in the A 200m (27.9) and helped the women's 4 x 100m squad to an excellent second place.

Chloe Bradley warmed up nicely for this weekend's English Schools' Championships at Sheffield when setting a new personal best time of 58.6 when winning the 400 metres.

Lisa Revitt also looked in good form ahead of her crack at English Schools' Championships by cruising to victory in the 100m hurdles in a time of 16 seconds.

Another English Schools' contender, Kelly Bramhald, set a personal best in winning the javelin with a throw of of 38.14m.

The versatile Theresa Markefke won both the triple jump (9.68m) and hgh jump (1.45m) as well as coming third in the shot and being a member of the 4 x 100 team which finished second.

Result: Scunthorpe 461.5 (six points), Doncaster 351.0 (five points), Barnsley 321.5 (four points), Grantham 317.0 (three points),Cleethorpes 310.0 (two points), Hallamshire 149.0 (one point).
