Antony's England debut sees glorious win

DONCASTER Plant Works' Antony Carolan made a knockout England debut in the annual Three Nations International held at Everton Park Sports Centre.

Despite a late call-up - he had just over 24 hours to prepare for the fight - Carolan comfortably outpointed Scottish champion John Barnes 12-2 in their Under-69kg clash on Friday night.

"To say that Carolan hadn't done much since losing in the Junior ABA final against David Dignum last month, he boxed beautifully," enthused veteran Plant Works coach Ken Blood.

With Dignum beating the Welsh champion on the same night, the two boxers met for a third time this season in a major final on Saturday.

Well beaten by the Essex-based boxer in the National Association of Boys' Clubs final, Carolan had given a much better account of himself in the ABA finals and felt that he was in with a fighting chance of making it third time lucky against Dignum.

"Dignum is an outstanding boxer but Carolan is definitely getting closer to beating him," said Blood.

"He eventually lost 5-2 but it was 2-2, and anybody's fight, until the closing stages. I think the lack of training caught up with him late on, as it had done against Barnes, and Dignum caught him with a good combination."

"Carolan was obviously a bit disappointed, but he's had a great season and his first Engand vest just capped it all off."
