Antony shines in defeat

DONCASTER'S Antony Carolan still lost out to favourite David Dignum in their junior ABA Class 5 Under-70kg final at the Everton Sports Centre despite producing a knockout performance.

Carolan was beaten with embarrassing ease when the pair met in the National Association of Boys' Clubs final earlier in the season in a contest where he failed to do himself justice.

It was a different story on Sunday with the 16 year-old Carolan showing why he is ranked No 2 and deserved better than an 8-2 scoreline.

There was little to chose between the boxers in the first round with Dignum just edging in front at 2-1.

Neither Carolan nor coach Ken Blood were happy with a second round score of 5-0 in Dignum's favour.

"The fact that Carolan, who had done everything asked of him was 7-1 down going into the last round meant that he had to throw caution to the wind and he went after Dignum," said Blood.

"But he's not so highly rated for nothing and he proved hard to hit and it finished 1-1. Dignum was a worthy winner but it should have been a couple of points closer."
