Owls to build future around young stars

SHEFFIELD Wednesday today insisted they were committed to building a future around its young stars - with players like Richard Wood and Tommy Spurr very much at the heart of their plans.

Wood, aged 23, and Spurr, 21, have both been offered contract extensions, but have yet to say yes, sparking concerns among some fans they may use the final year of their current contracts at Hillsborough as a launch pad to move on.

But Wednesday chief executive Nick Parker sent a clear signal today that the Owls are committed to keeping young players like them at the club.

"We are not a selling club" said Parker. "Of course we want to keep all our best young players.

"We have a core of young really good players and around that I think what Brian Laws has been trying to do is bring in a bit of experience.

"Darren Purse, (32) Tommy Miller (30) and Michael Gray (34) are slightly older, more experienced and a bit more level headed.

"He has been bringing in experience while trying to keep the youth and enthusiasm that we have there and I think its quite cool really.

"Brian has a budget he knows he has to work within it we have made offers to everybody we want to keep" said Parker.

Parker said that the club had made offers of longer improved deals to the pair.

Wednesday had the best Championship division home record in terms of goals conceded, last season, but acknowledge that it was away from home where inexperience was sometimes exposed.

They finished 12th last season, winning 17 but losing 16 games.
