But the Owls haven't been knocked off their perch after five games - remaining one point ahead of second place Carlisle.

Brentford meanwhile climbed off the bottom of the league thanks to Charlie MacDonald's first-half strike secured victory at Griffin Park.

It brought Wednesday's unbeaten start to their league campaign to an end.

Owls keeper Nicky Weaver earlier saved a Robbie Simpson header before MacDonald fired the Bees ahead with a low shot on the turn.

Wednesday, who had scored seven goials in their previous two games, improved after the break and Marcus Tudgay almost beat Ben Hamer in a bid to level the score.

Brentford continued to threaten as Simpson hit the bar and a superb save by Weaver denied Nicky Adams.

Mark Beevers also cleared another effort by Simpson off the line.

Peterborough, Carlisle and Oldham all blew chances to leapfrog Wednesday after failing to win games against struggling opponents yesterday.
