Owls look at Windies star

SHEFFIELD Wednesday are to take another look at a World Cup midfielder - after he too fell victim to the Hillsborough injury jinx.

Silvio Spann, a Trinidad and Tobago international, arrived at Middlewood for a trial but was injured on his first day.

Manager Paul Sturrock plans to re-assess the 24-year-old when he has recovered from his knock.

"He is due to come back in a couple of week's time," said Sturrock, who will be looking at Spann with next season in mind.

Spann is likely to be in the Trinidad and Tobago squad that faces England in this summer's World Cup finals in Germany.

He recently parted company with Japanese club Yokohama, and has had spells with Perugia of Italy, Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia and Kenwyne Jones's old club, W Connection of Trinidad.

Two years ago he had trials with German club Borussia Moenchengladbach, Crystal Palace and Derby.

Wednesday will not be pursuing their interest in another triallist, Scott Gemmill.

The former Forest, Everton and Leicester midfielder broke off from his spell of training with the Owls, to attend a coaching course in Scotland.

Sturrock also had not seen enough from the 35-year-old to make a case for a contract, and will have other irons in the fire as he seeks an experienced midfielder to boost an injury-hit squad. This is the one remaining piece in the jigsaw, after last week's loan signings of goalkeeper Scott Carson and defender Mikkel Bischoff.

Preston, visitors to Hillsborough on Saturday, have lost 10-goal striker David Nugent to a suspected foot fracture.

He scored twice in last night's 3-1 home win against Ipswich and helped his team rise to sixth place, but hobbled off, with manager Billy Davies fearing that he could be out for at least six weeks - a huge blow to the Lillywhites' play-off challenge.

Davies said: "It doesn't look good.

"We think it's possibly a broken metatarsal.

"He said he felt his ankle go over, it's a disappointment and a major blow but hopefully it won't be as bad as we think."
