One of Britain’s most prestigious greyhound racing competitions hots up next week with the semi-final of the 2015 Steel City Cup.
Following the heats at Owlerton earlier this week, the semi-final will be run on Tuesday, August 25.
Amongst those who have qualified are Sheffield-based trainers Lisa Stephenson, with Princess Sofia, Barrie Draper and Ballymac Mossjoe, Russ Warren and Swift America and Elaine Parker with Demesne Rambo.
The annual three-stage, 500m race, which was first held in 1970, attracts the best trainers and greyhounds from across the country.
In the final at Owlerton on Wednesday, September 2, which will be televised live on Sky Sports, six greyhounds will race for the title and £7,500 in prize money.
Elaine Parker will be hoping to win back the title she secured in 2013 with Pay Freeze. Last year, Romford trainer Paul Young picked up first place with his dog, Underground Paul.
Owlerton managing director John Gilburn said: “It’s always exciting when the Steel City Cup comes around. It’s one of the highlights on our calendar.
“Some of the best dogs in the country come to race in this event. It’s a very exciting time for spectators, trainers and organisers alike.”
Meanwhile, Owlerton’s Summer Madness offer has been extended until the end of September due to popular demand. The deal includes a beer, burger and a bet from £3 per person.
