A group of professional trainers attached to Owlerton Stadium has qualified to compete in the finale of greyhound racing’s biggest team event which is taking place in the city on Monday.
Owlerton Greyhound Stadium has been chosen to host the Bookmakers’ Afternoon Greyhound Services (BAGS) Track Championship Grand Final on Monday 23 December.
Sheffield is one of six teams from around the country who have qualified and will go head to head with Newcastle, Peterborough, Romford, Hall Green Stadium and Brighton & Hove Stadium.
Teams will be competing to win £12,500, with half the money being split equally between the competing trainers and the rest going into stadium prize money.
The event, which is also sponsored by Satellite Information Services (SIS), will see greyhound racing take centre stage two days before Christmas on a day when there is no UK horseracing.

“It’s fantastic that we will also be represented by a team of talented trainers who have done extremely well to qualify, beating tough opposition to make the final.
“It promises to be a great afternoon with tracks putting their best possible teams together for the final. You can expect the rivalry to be fierce and the action to be fast, creating a wonderful pre-Christmas atmosphere at Owlerton.”
Finals day, which follows a series of heats around the country, will feature 10 events - two staying races, and two standard distance races for dogs, two standard distance races for bitches, two standard distance races for both bitches and dogs, plus a sprint and a puppy race.
Owlerton has also been chosen to host the Greyhound Trainers Association Trainers’ Championship in March 2014.
Turnstiles open at 12.30pm for the BAGS Track Championship Grand Final with the first race at 2.08pm.
