White's final frame agony
JIMMY White, a six-times World Championship finalist, has failed to qualify for this month's BBC-televised Maplin UK Championship in Telford, which runs December 13-21.
The 'Whirlwind' lost a dramatic final frame decider in a 9-8 upset to Wellingborough qualifier Rory McLeod in the penultimate round of qualifying at the EIS in Sheffield.
And with defeat the crowd favourite, down to No 65 in the world rankings, missed out on a final qualifying round clash with Stoke's Dave Harold, this season's Northern Ireland Trophy runner-up.
But there was success for former world champion Ken Doherty as he avoided a China Crisis to secure qualification for the next major ranking tournament on the snooker calendar.
The 1997 world champion impressed with a 9-4 victory over Sheffield-based Chinese cueman Liu Chuang in the final round of qualifying for this year's tournament.
And with victory the Dubliner, who is out of the elite top 16 for the first time in 15 years, will now lock horns with Glaswegian Graeme Dott, the 2005 world champion, in the first round at Telford.
Top names Matthew Stevens, Ian McCulloch, Joe Swail, Stephen Lee and Steve Davis, a four-time UK winner, will all be in action today on the final day of qualiftying.
